The Most Dangerous Game Unit Plan

Do you want your students to experience the thrilling, high stakes, conflict between Rainsford and General Zaroff like never before?

This seven-day unit plan includes everything your students need to embark on a grand adventure to the Caribbean! Teens love seeing the illustrations of characters and story elements come to life in the Close Reader. The art style and close reading questions get students to engage with the text like never before.

Teens collaborate in small group stations where they learn key literary devices and information about the characters, setting, and story. It’s satisfying to watch kids take ownership of their learning and work together to complete challenges. The best part is that these stations, and the entire unit, focus on teaching to the rigor of the Common Core standards.

Main Activities

Students will engage in a variety of core activities that will help them develop their skills and scaffold the learning process. Below is a list of the main activities. A preview may be found by clicking on the title of each activity.

  • Small Group Stations - Students work in small groups of 3-5 to complete mini-challenges based on the setting, plot, characters, and literary devices being used in the text.

  • Close Reader - An in-depth analysis of the text with guiding questions and beautiful illustrations.

  • Power Level Calculator - Students practice finding textual evidence to support an analysis of each character’s power level

  • Conflict Worksheet - An exploration of conflict in the text. Mainly focusing on human vs. nature and human vs. human conflict.

  • Challenging Summative Exam - A two-part test at the end of the unit will gauge student mastery of the standards and learning objectives. Questions designed to be similar to what they will experience on state tests.

This means teachers should expect two-part questions, multi-select answers, and more modern assessment question formats. The second part of the test is a written portion with four prompts. Students must choose two of the four prompts to respond to with textual evidence.
